Hi, welcome to the series where I analyze movie scenes! Today Ill be talking about the amount of detail in the scene above from the film "Juno". The Scene begins with Juno handing Mark a CD telling him to play All The Young Dudes by Mott The Hoople. I think this action alone is a beautiful sign of the attention to detail(but I'll get to that later). The track begins to play and Mark tells Juno that he not only knew this song but that he had danced to it at his senior prom. This bit of dialogue is foreshadowing to the reason Mark and Vanessa dont work, that being vanessa finds him childish and he thinks he is still in his prime. This causes Juno to sarcastically make fun of Mark by calling him a dork then proceeding to mimic how she visioned his awkward dancing in high school. Mark (in an attempt to come off as smooth) corrects Junos dancing movements then asks if she feels something between them as the camera runs down to show her that physically the baby is a wedge between them and reference the fact Mark is referring to an emotional bond, giving us a strong understanding of how both of the characters feel, the tone, and the situation using one piece of dialogue. As they dance the song goes to the chorus "All the young dudes (hey dudes!) Carry the news (where are you?) Boogaloo dudes (stand up, come on) Carry the news All the young dudes (I want to hear you) Carry the news (I want to see you) Boogaloo dudes (I want to talk to you, all of you) Carry the news (now)" which foreshadows and alludes to the painful information Mark is preparing to reveal, that he is leaving Vanessa for reasons that were foreshadowed earlier in this scene and the film. Juno looks at him panicked and the scene ends. Although this scene is not without flaw and the characters involved clearly had some questionable motivations the foreshadowing, tone, and writer Diablo Cody along with director Jason Reitman were able to show in under two minutes is amazing!
