When technology exceeds humanity… Although predictable this 2014 short by Ariel Martin exceeds expectation and is an extremely entertaining experience. The shorts stand out qualities are production value, a stand out performance by Matilda brown and surprisingly almost no special effects. This shorts performances and direction make it instantly entertaining, however no short is without fault. Throughout the film there are cuts to an as seen on TV commercial for Imom which do have a purpose in the short unfortunately come off as distracting and out of the tone luckily are short. The short also has he problem of predictability, its very clear how the shorts going to end around the 3 minute mark leaving nearly 10 minutes with mediocre suspense. Rating: 80%

Bree, a dishonest 9-year-old receives a terrifying visitor after a parenting lesson goes horribly wrong. Justin Hardings 2016 short Kookie was successfully spooky with minimal gore or jumpscares! The short unfortunately has an unclear message making the story come off as unfinished or poorly written. By the end its not much better, it feels like there should be a second half or a missing scene from the short because although we do see the clown at the end we don't find out if its haunting her, if shes working with it ( she doesn't come off as scared by it), and we don't know what the babysitter saw. Lack of detail in horror can lead your imagination to wander and add to the fear factor but here all it does is make the script look unfinished which is a shame because the production quality, designs, and acting (especially for an actor of that age) are all there but the story still fails on its own marrot. Rating: 78%A bullied schoolboy takes drastic measures against his tormenter, summoning an ancient being in the woods using a spellbound book passed down through the generations of his family. Todays short by Anthony Melton and Ben Franklin was a great example of how to show your characters back story. The film is interesting as it presents the "monster" as an ally instead of an evil spirit. The short had interesting back story, understandable characters, good special effects (they're all traditional!) and doesn't have any jump scares. The short could easily be adapted into a feature film... which is where the problems come in. Unfortunately because it feels like a feature length film the short manages to feel unfinished and rushed. This story is to interesting to be squeezed down into 7 minutes. Rating: 75%In a classroom, a girl is sitting on the desk, solving a math quiz. If she cannot solve it in time, a horrible thing is likely to happen. 2011s "A Function " the nearly dialogue less film makes a statement on the pressure of school and grades. As the woman takes notes and does difficult math problems she slowly watches her classmates die and begins rushing to open her work. The short is written in a way that doesn't waste time but shows us the important information to finish the short with a positive experience. Unfortunately the short is unclear with there message and the description is based off of my interpretation only. This is part of the experience though, it seems intentional that the writer wanted you to select what it means leading to mixed reviews and an unclear writing motive which is one of the shorts biggest issues. The short, although confidently shot and an interesting concept doesn't seem to know what its attempting. there is clearly a message here but is buried by lack of dialogue and visual cues. The acting doesn't get to shine either as there is very little to do. This short feels unintentionally empty which appears to be an error in the direction or the script. Overall this short isn't worth your time. Rating: 29%Following a death in the family, its members start hearing a mysterious sound unfortunately 2018s The Bells was the short equivalent to a Blum house film. The short had an annoying sound design that was terribly unpleasant. The short builds up anticipation that leads to nothing and we only see the monster for a couple seconds. Its unclear what the origins of this character are or why they do what they do. The short wasn't very interesting or fun to me and I would not recommended it. My rating: 54%A coroner fixes up the new body in the morgue, and adds a few touches of his own 2020s Kissed by Elwood Quincy Walker surprises the audience with a bizarre and off putting vibe sure to put a chill down your spine. This short is able to give us just as much information and scares as we need without wasting a second. Although the jumpscare towards the end was quite cheesy I loved the rest of the project! Well shot, well edited, well written and wonderful special effects... not much to say about this one Just check it out. My rating: 95%unfortunately this short let me down. The short had nearly nothing to offer. Just cheap jumpscares, poor writing, and boring filming. Levi Morgan's 2020 "The Mannequin" unfortunately highlights many of the issues with modern horror. Although this short has an interesting concept and is well shot there is practically no story. The film doesn't utilize camera angles, script, or story. It would be more interesting to see why or how the mannequins do what they do. I don't have much else to say on this one. Its just boring and bland Rating: 60%Hello my ghosts and goblins! Welcome to the very first 31 Days of horror AKA #31horroreve Today we will be discussing the 2015 short film "Teeth" by Tom Brown and Daniel Grey Description: "Things of worth are often neglected in favour of that which might be more immediately gratifying. Unfortunately, the things that are neglected are often lost forever, irreplaceable. This is the story of a man with a misguided and intense focus – one which started in his youth and carried on to old age. His life events are chronicled through the loss of his teeth – and how his obsessive efforts to amend what was damaged bring on yet further destruction."- Letterboxd ThoughtsIm Happy to report we are starting off STRONG this year. This short manages to grab a strong hold of your attention, the sounds gnawing in your ear the visuals so uncomfortable you can't help but stare with smooth uncomfortable narration playing in the background. The presentation of this short is so in your face that you can't help but look even though you don't want to. Although this story is beautifully and perfectly presented to you the narrative unfortunately still manage to come off as messy and unclear... you could argue this is intentional but I don't believe it was. Yes there is a narrative but the story is fumbled and a bit messy, but in a short this stylized and attention grabbing its easy to overlook any narrative no matter how i comes across . Over all if you're looking for a short to sink your teeth into this is the one for you My rating: 84% |
